Core 1 with Dave Pearce – Find Your Joy! • Thursdays 7:30–10:00 PM • Beginning January 22, 2015 (8 classes)

This class is the Introduction to the SoCap style of improv.

We emphasize:
• character and relationship over narrative
• ‘being in the moment’ over trying to be clever
• making choices that have personal stakes
• making connections over making jokes
• fun and play
• simplicity and clarity

If this sounds like what you’ve been looking for, then The Social Capital Theatre’s Improv program is for you!

— CONTINUING PROGRAM CLASSES (permission of Workshop Director) —

Boomsicle with Natasha Boomer • Sundays 3:00–6:00 PM • Beginning January 18, 2015 (7 classes)

Scenework with Matt McCready • Tuesdays 7:30–10:00 PM • Beginning January 20, 2015 (8 classes)

Find that your mind naturally wanders off the beaten track?  This class will help make coherent, relatable scenes out of the most inane premises.

Any premise is salvageable if treated with enough commitment.  Find the art, meaning, emotion and connectivity between a man and woman wandering through the large intestine of a whale.  Find the humanity that lies within the talking clock that’s dating the football coach’s daughter.

Find yourselves lost when a scene partner paints a reality for which you’re unfamiliar?  Feel like you’re doing the same scene over and over?  Are you overwhelmed when your scene partner presents an outrageous premise?  This class will help you embrace the insanity without any hesitation.

The Soap Opera with Ralph MacLeod • Thursdays 7:30–10:00 PM • Beginning January 22, 2015 (8 classes)

In this class we will learn the Soap Opera (or Directed Play) format.  This format is featured in several of the core shows at SoCap including Murder at the Burlesque, Golden Ages TV, and the upcoming Hot Cops in Love!

The class stresses qualities that are important to tell a single story that can last as short as 20 minutes or be told over several episodes over multiple weeks.  These include character and relationship, finding the games of the scenes, narrative beats, emotional stakes, character wants, and much more.  The class culminates with a performance of a directed play.
